From Pastor Andrew’s Desk

Greetings FCCB’ers!
It is great to be back after a wonderful time Becky and I had in Nashville! The wedding we went to was a real joy to attend. We had time with good friends, Alabama won and I heard some great country music. So all in all, a blast! The kids love being with their grandparents and we were so grateful for the help! I was also encouraged to hear that Sunday went well. Thanks to Pastor Tom Fagan for preaching and Pastor Tom Pfizenmaier for leading Communion.  This Sunday is “Refreshed and Ready” and I look forward to our return to the sanctuary for the year.

Also, a reminder that Sunday School starts this fall as we look at growing a vibrant relationship with God through prayer!

I am very excited about this series. We have a variety of different teachers looking at this theme of a relationship with God and prayer from many angles. I’ll kick off this Sunday from 9:00 to 10:00 am in the Coggin Room, speaking about God’s transforming work through prayer. After the service, join us for a BBQ after the service, next to and inside the FLC as we celebrate the first Sunday of fall! Come and have some great fellowship and food!

This Sunday we continue our three month series through the Book of Joshua. We have two more weeks until we wrap up! This week we’ll look at Joshua 14:1-15The first five verses deal with the inherited promised land and dividing lines that the Israelites received as commanded by God through Moses (v. 5). Verse 6 picks up with the people of Judah approaching Joshua and Caleb, son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite. Caleb said to Joshua,

“You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God about you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, but my fellow Israelites who went up with the people made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.”

Joshua 14:8-9.
So Caleb is now recalling his journey of faith to Joshua who has also walked with God all those years. It is so important to recall God’s faithfulness in our lives and then relate these events to others, helping them remember God’s faithfulness in their lives. This is what Caleb is doing with Joshua. Caleb is referring to the story in Numbers 13 and 14 when Moses sends out twelve spies from the twelve tribes to explore the land of Canaan to give a report on what they saw. I would encourage you to read Numbers 13 and 14 on your own, but essentially what happens is – ten of the spies come back with a bad report about the land. They claim that the people living there are giants and that it would be too hard to go into the land.
Meanwhile, Joshua and Caleb saw the same thing, but had a much different report. Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said,
“We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” (Numbers 13:30). Caleb believed in God and His power, even in the midst of great odds against him.
Do we have that type of spirit and belief or do we shrink back in the face of opposition.
Oftentimes, people can see the same problems and have much different reactions. Either someone will shrink back completely and wallow in unbelief, or believe that God will lead, no matter what. I suggest that the second type of faith response I just described is absolutely key for us in the future to experience the fullness that He has for us as a church…let’s not miss it!

In this case, the Israelites refused to believe the promises of God through Caleb and therefore were sentenced to forty years of wandering in the desert of Egypt due to their unbelief. Yet, Caleb and Joshua were able to eventually enter the land despite the unbelief of the people. Caleb brought back a report according to his convictions forty years ago and after all this time as passed, he has not forgotten the promises of God;
“Now then, just as the Lord promised, He has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go to battle now as I was then”
(v. 10-11).

Wow, now that is an inspiring speech!! Many odds are against Caleb in his advanced age. But Caleb knows that with God anything is possible! Caleb is not letting a perceived inhibitor (age) get in the way. I for one am so grateful for all the seasoned saints in our church who continue to seek the Lord and have a great impact for Him! I am amazed by how many of you in our church are in your 80’s and 90’s and still passionately pursuing the Lord. You are an inspiration for us all! Thank you for your response to God’s leading throughout your life, we are blessed because of it.

This was certainly the case for those impacted by Caleb’s life. We could all easily look at inhibitors to serving and making an impact for God in our own lives. Perhaps we could say or have said: I am too old, too young, don’t know enough about the Bible, am not smart enough, am too busy, am fearful, etc., etc., etc., as inhibitors to serving God and making an impact for Him.
The Bible has a different approach! ….. “For the Lord does not see as man sees, for man looks the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7.
Also, look at v. 12– Caleb had the same response that he had forty-five years prior regarding the land; that they could take the land! Caleb saw the vision forty-five years ago and now was the time to see it fulfilled. Wow, that puts things into perspective. Certainly, we hope that most things in our Christian walk might not take so long to see fulfilled, but they might. So will we walk by faith or by sight? Where are you waiting on the Lord right now?
Maybe write down some of those areas and ask for His continued leading in these things as we wait. Help us Lord to worship you in the waiting. Here is a good song about worshipping while waiting . Click the link to listen.
The Lord’s question is as Doffy so often says….. “are you willing?” Are we willing to believe that God can use us for His glory at any age and stage in our lives, young or old?! If so, what God will do with such faith! Caleb knew He had one more key battle before he received his inheritance from God in Hebron. And so Caleb stepped forward in faith.
We don’t know how many battles lay in front of us in our journey with the Lord, but we can trust that He is truly Sovereign and will lead us every step of the way to that glorious inheritance that is in Him. Thanks be to God.
I hope to see you this Sunday at Sunday School, the service and the BBQ! It’s going to truly be a blessed Sunday in the Lord.

Blessings,
Pastor Andrew
